Super Bowl Potpourri
Have I ever forgotten anything?
I empathize with Joe Biden, as I had a life-changing event that had to do with the perception of my memory.
When I was nine years old, I was trying out for a church play. The audition required that I sing God Bless America.
I choked.
I froze because I forgot the words. It happened somewhere near “Through the night with a light from above.” I think I went with, “Though we fight, we don’t bite, we don’t shove.”
David Phillips nailed the audition. I don’t know where David is today. Perhaps his life is better than mine because David knew all the words to God Bless America, and he could carry a tune!
I probably would have moved on to doing solos in church choir, then getting into a rock band, then cutting albums, then selling out stadiums…
So, Joe, don’t worry about the slip-ups. Try to avoid ordering falafel at Mexican restaurants, or a chimichanga at an Egyptian restaurant! And don’t push that red button thinking that you are calling an elevator!
Who, or what, am I being formed into? Physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally?
I have never done anything that I haven’t tried.
I am so grateful for friendships. It is amazing how enriching they are, how much joy they bring, and how energizing they are.
Who will win the Super Bowl?
Okay, I know it is the team that scores the most points. But I think it will be the team whose players reflect their coach in their love for one another, their courage, their vulnerability, their joy in playing the game, and their toughness.
History doesn’t repeat itself, but it does echo.
Here we have the Kansas City Chiefs playing the San Francisco 49ers yet again, as happened on February 2, 2020, in Super Bowl LIV.
But this Super Bowl will be completely different – (some) different players, some different coaches, a different stadium, and a different Album of the Year Grammy-winning fan in attendance, hopefully, if her flight back from Tokyo goes off without a hitch.
Is all of life a prayer? Do we not spend all of our lives asking someone for something?
I think the key here is not just what we are asking for, but to whom we are asking it.
Why is it so hard to be humble? (I am one of the best people in the world at being humble.)
What is success in this life? Is it winning championships? Or is it, as John Wooden says, “The peace of mind that is a direct result of the satisfaction of knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming”?
I am so glad that I took V years of Latin in high school so that I could know which Super Bowl this is!
(As we all know, this is Super Bowl LVIII!)
I suggest that Joe Biden and Donald Trump start expressing their age in Roman numerals!
Biden is LXXXI anni (years) old; Trump is LXXVII anni old.
Wait? Does this mean that Trump is L older than Biden, or that Trump is I older than Biden? I mean, he has got one more Roman numeral in his age…That has to count for something!
