My “No Resolution Resolution”!
I am not big on making New Year’s resolutions.
Why should I resolve to do something on January 1st that I should have been doing all year long?
The best resolutions I have had in my life occurred when I just went ahead and finally did something I had meant to do for a long time.
It is important that anything I resolve to do be of a positive nature.
I had a really crappy year back in the 1980s when my resolution was “No More ‘Mr. Nice Guy’”
Social isolation and self-loathing followed.
One of my best friends had an excellent resolution for 2023. It was their “Year of Saying ‘Yes’.” This friend maintained that attitude the entire year – and it was very effective – this person had a fulfilling and adventurous year.
That said, the most important decisions in my life have come when I decided to do something, and I just did it. None of these “resolutions” occurred in January. They all happened during the year.
A good example is December 18, 2016.
It was on that day that I decided to forgo alcohol.
2,580 days later, that streak continues.
That was not a New Year's resolution.
That was a December 18, 2016 resolution.
That is a January 14, 2024 resolution.
I can also point to my November 15, 1976 resolution to not leave Davidson College just because I had been cut from the basketball team and my March 4, 1990 resolution to call Jill Stewart to get help with the client's problem (I married Jill).
So, let’s raise a toast (of whatever your beverage of choice may be…) to the “No Resolution Resolution.”
Here's to living a life based on a core set of values that can guide me through any situation every day.
Here's to you – and to a great 2024!
