April Showers

  1. It is stunning how beautiful Atlanta is at present and how Mother Nature has whipped up the wind just in time for The Masters.

  2. Wind does not impact my golf game as much as ant hills.

  3. I always reference Stephen Covey’s Habit #2 of Highly Effective People – “Begin with the End in Mind “ – as the reason to begin a CEO succession project with a SWOT analysis, and a “visioning” session about the organization’s “end game.” The board needs to be asking: “In 3 to 5 years:

    1. What will be different about the market for our products?

    2. What will be different about how we go to market and the technology used in our business?

    3. What will be different about the competitive landscape? The regulatory environment?

    4. Just as important is the question, “What will be the same for our business?”

  4. If the CEO and the board of directors perform their respective roles properly in the three years leading up to a CEO transition – there will be no need to search for an external candidate to take the reins as CEO. That said, it behooves the board of directors to benchmark the internal candidates against a hypothetical slate of external prospects for the CEO role.

  5. I wonder how well business results correlate with the patterns of nature (winter, spring, summer, and fall).

  6. Spring makes me think of the start of baseball season and, naturally, the Atlanta Braves. I have always resented the fact that the Braves have never recognized me for my contributions to their success. I moved to Atlanta in August 1991, the month the Braves finished their climb from “worst to first” place in the National League West Division. No one else on the planet has noticed the obvious correlation between my Atlanta arrival and the turnaround of the Braves’ fortunes.

  7. Nicknames of the Atlanta Braves have included The Red Stockings (1876 to 1882), the Beaneaters (1883 to 1906), the Doves (1907 to 1910), the Rustlers (1911), the Bees (1935 to 1940), and finally, the Braves (1912 to 1935 and 1940 to Present). Wow – the Beaneaters! What a gas that must have been?

  8. Where else can you get this type of juvenile humor from someone who should be cashing Social Security checks?

  9. I am starting to realize that the word “pollution” covers a much wider range of noxious, toxic things than just those that are environmental.

  10. As such, I will work to avoid having this “Thoughts for the Week” email pollute your inbox any further!
